Ares - Faculty Tutorial (Canvas)

Creating a course page

Navigate to your Canvas course home page and click on the Ares Course Reserve link

The first time you click on the Ares Course Reserves link in a Canvas course, you will be prompted to choose a semester and create the course

Use the dropdown menu to choose the semester in which the course is taking place. DO NOT USE "CURRENT SEMESTER."

You have now created a new Ares course page for this class

Adding reserve items

Watch this short how-to video about adding new readings: https://screencast-o-matic.com/u/jTig/AresNew

You may add a number of different reserve items to a course, including articles, book chapters, books (eBooks only), audio, video, and free-text

To add a reserve item, click on Add Reserve Item in the Instructor Course Tools menu

Choose the type of reserve item you are posting

Complete the form.  Fields with an asterisk are required

Enter as many details as possible. Library staff use this information to clear copyright. Entering a complete citation ensures that there are no delays processing your reserve items

Next, select how the item will be supplied. If you:

  • are ready to upload the file (PDF, .doc, .ppt, etc.) choose I will upload a file
  • want library staff to scan a chapter or article that you will provide choose I will bring the material to the library
  • need library staff to obtain the item (either owned by the library or via interlibrary loan) choose Please have library staff pull the material off the shelves
  • are linking to an eBook, online newspaper or any other website choose The item should link to a website or the item is an eBook and can be access from a website. Enter the URL in the field below

If you are teaching more than one section of the course, or if you are using the reading in more than one course, you may select those courses from the list provided before clicking submit

Once you are done completing the form, click Submit Item

Copying (cloning) readings from another course

Watch this short how-to video about copying readings: https://screencast-o-matic.com/u/jTig/AresClone

You may copy (clone) readings you have previously used in Ares to another course. This is particularly useful if you are teaching the same course semester to semester or add an additional section of a course

To successfully copy readings to a new course, you must open the course to which you want the readings copied. In other words, open the NEW or UPCOMING course, not the old course from which you are copying the readings

Open the Ares course page for the course you want to copy readings to. Click on Add Reserve Items in the Instructor Course Tools menu

Scroll down and locate the course from which you want to copy readings. Click on Import Items

Select individual readings or deselect readings you do not wish to copy. Click Import Items

The readings are now imported into the new course. Readings are made available to students one week before classes begin

Editing a reading or uploading a new file

To change citation details or upload a new file, click on the Edit link next to the item you want to edit

Make the changes and choose how you would like to supply the item. If you

  • do not want to change the file associated with this reading choose Next, select how the item will be supplied. If you: I do not want to change the actual reserve content. This will keep the existing file attached to the reading

Click Submit Item

Deleting readings

Click on the Show Details link and click on Delete This Item

You may also edit item details and add tags in this screen

Adding, editing and deleting tags

Watch this short how-to video about tags: https://screencast-o-matic.com/u/jTig/AresTags

Tags are a useful tool for organizing course readings. Students can view and sort their readings using the tags you create. Common tags include class week number (e.g. week 1, week 5, etc.), module (e.g. module 2, module 4, etc.), and topic (e.g. depression, anxiety, etc.). Note that tags copy over when you copy (clone) readings to a new course. We advise you not to use specific dates or other tags that will not carry meaning into a new course.

There are two types of tag: Instructor tags (public) and Personal tags (private).

There are two ways to add Instructor tags, which can be seen by anyone with access to the course

The first is when adding a new reserve item. After completing the citation fields, you may enter tags, separated by a comma, in the Tags field.

The second way to add tags, both Instructor and Personal, is in the Show Details screen.

Enter the tags, separated by a comma, in the appropriate section. Click on Modify Tags when you are finished.

Note, the screen does not change after clicking Modify Tags, but the tags are saved.
